The Sacred City Derby Girls, one of Sacramento’s adult roller derby teams, are hosting their second Grown-Up Spelling Bee at Bows on April 27!

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Gender Health Center; a $7-$15 donation is recommended to spell. It will be just like the Spelling Bee you aced in the third grade, but this time with Happy Hour specials–$1 off all taps while you’re in the game–and maybe a dirty word or two. Anyone can spell (18+).
Sign up starts at 7 and Round One starts at 8!
BRING IT.

I asked Rachael Hudson, Operations Manager at the Gender Health Center, some questions about the organization.
How long has the Gender Health Center been around? Are there different branches?
The Gender Health Center opened its doors to the public on July 7, 2010. The planning started in 2008 but stopped when our visionary, Danelle Saldana passed away at 30 years old in 2009. We, along with several other community members, got together to continue what she had started. As of today there is only one Gender Health Center and it’s right here in Sacramento.
What are some of the main services the Gender Health Center provides?
Our main service is affordable sliding scale counseling but we also offer hormone and surgery letters, referrals to other agencies, groups, and workshops. Recently we’ve added name and gender change paperwork help and a hormone clinic starting Saturday May 5th, where individuals can get prescriptions for hormones as well as be trained on how to self inject.
Why is the Gender Health Center important?
We make ordinarily inaccessible health services available and affordable to marginalized and underprivileged communities by focusing on the health and wellness of transgender and gay individuals and families. We offer these services to anyone for any reason without discrimination. We are a community focused non-profit organization that runs on grants and donations which allows us to offer our services on a sliding scale, meaning we are not running on client fees.
Why do you think the idea of an adult spelling bee is a good one?
Good question. The United States is full of sexually repressed individuals. Sexual repression is often associated with feelings of guilt or shame being associated with sexual impulses. A healthy mental state does not include guilt and all consensual sex is good sex so why all the guilt? A Grown-up Spelling Bee helps people have fun and relax while talking about sex… guilt free.
